I am so grateful to all of you who have reached out to me for an update on Mabel. I know that many are praying. It’s been a tough and emotional week for the Sykes family. Here is an update from our team at Pure and Faultless. Please, please keep praying, friends. As I have watched this precious family walk this journey over the last few weeks, I have been reminded of something over and over again…
God hardly ever calls His people to do the easy things! No, He only calls His church to be obedient…no matter what.
THANK YOU for praying!
We are writing to invite you into a time of prayer for Mabel. Tana, Troy and Mabel traveled to Houston a couple of weeks ago to complete the testing required to place Mabel on the heart transplant list. Toward the end of the testing, Mabel’s heart became stressed and she was admitted to the ICU.
While in the hospital, Mabel celebrated her birthday surrounded by her new family. Praise God! Shortly thereafter, the doctors decided it was time to attempt to provide Mabel with a device that would keep her heart beating while she awaits a transplant. The procedure failed and Mabel was place on ECMO — a temporary machine used to bridge her until transplant or further procedure. The doctors also noted that Mabel had dark spots on her lungs which cause them to perform some additional testing.
The lung biopsy showed possible reversible pulmonary hypertension with a good possibility that her lungs will heal. But there are no guarantees. Because of the hopeful lung news, yesterday, the doctors approached Troy and Tana with an impossible question: allow Mabel to pass gently into Jesus’ arms or try another surgery that could save her life. This time, having been on ECMO for a couple of days, the doctors would attempt to give Mabel a bi-VAD that would keep her heart pumping until a transplant and allow her lungs {hopefully} to heal. Tana and Troy decided to move forward in faith for another surgery.
Mabel was in surgery from 9 a.m. until after 6, but the surgery was successful. She now has a bi-VAD. Now we wait to see how her lungs respond and if they can become healthy enough to reactivate her place on the transplant list.
Mabel needs prayers. All of the Sykes family do. Here’s what they need:
Pray that Mabel does well on the bi-VAD and remains stable
Pray for complete healing for Mabel’s lungs so that she can be reactivated on the transplant list.
Pray for Troy, Tana and their sons as they face these wrenching decisions and watch their loved daughter fight for her life.
Pray for a hero heart; this is the hardest one because we know what that means for another family. Lord, hold all of these families in Your hands.
Thank you for standing in the gap for Mabel. The next five days are critical. But here is the good news! Every doctor who has met or treated Mabel has mentioned that she has the worst heart they have ever evaluated and yet, she lives and breathes and speaks and walks. Mabel is already a miracle.
Now we are praying for God to finish the good work He began in her!
In Jesus’ name.
Thank you.
